Activist Collective Claims to Have Scraped Countless of Audio Tracks from Spotify

A digital rights organization has claimed to have harvested millions of tracks from the popular streaming service and is preparing to publish them online.

Potential Boost for Artificial Intelligence Training

Industry experts said the apparent data breach could boost artificial intelligence firms searching for material to train their models.

An entity called Anna’s Archive reported it had scraped 86 million audio tracks from Spotify and 256 million rows of associated data such as artist and album names. The company, which hosts more than 100 million songs, stated that the breach did not constitute its full catalog.

“We have located and disabled the malicious user accounts that were involved in unlawful scraping,” said a company representative.

The Swedish company, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, added that an investigation into unauthorized access found a third party scraped public metadata and employed illicit methods to bypass DRM protections.

Archive's Declared Mission and Concerns

The streaming service does not think the music acquired by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is recognized for providing links to pirated books, wrote in a blog it wanted to create a ‘historical repository’ for music.

The group asserted the audio files accounted for 99.6% of all music listened to by Spotify users and would be distributed via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a method of exchanging large digital files online.

“Of course the service doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic beginning,” commented Anna’s Archive, which frames its mission as “safeguarding humanity’s knowledge and culture”.

Model Development and Intellectual Property Battleground

Ed Newton-Rex for defending artists’ rights, said the breached music would probably be used for training artificial intelligence systems.

“Educating models on illegally sourced material is sadly common in the AI industry, so this stolen music is highly likely to be used instructing AI models,” he said.

The group's website makes references to a large online archive, a vast online archive of copyrighted books that has reportedly been leveraged by the parent company of Facebook to train its AI models.

The co-founder of an AI startup wrote on LinkedIn that members of the public could in theory “build their own personal free version of Spotify”. He said it could also enable technology firms to “educate models on contemporary music at scale”.

Copyright has become a key issue between artists, authors and content creators on one side and AI companies on the other.

Government Proposals and Responses

In the UK, artists and writers have raised concerns against a ministerial suggestion to let AI companies use protected work without permission unless the rights holder signals. Virtually every respondent to a government consultation on the proposal has backed artists’ concerns.

The secretary of state for science, research and development told parliament this month there was “no clear consensus” on the issue, noting that ministers would “use the time to get this right”. The administration has committed to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by March 2025.
