Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
