Lifetime of Income Inadequate for UK Workers to Enter Most Affluent 10%, Report Finds

Based on recent study, the median earner in the UK would need over five decades of income to achieve the net worth of the most affluent 10% in the country.

Growing Economic Disparity Over Time

This research reviewed wealth distribution statistics from the Covid pandemic period and discovered that in the mid-2000s, it would have taken 38 years of average worker salary to reach the top 10th of the economic ladder.

A research lead part of the study stated: "Economic disparities in Britain are presently so substantial that a typical full-time employee accumulating their complete salary throughout their career would continue to be incapable to achieve the peak of the financial hierarchy."

Measuring the Wealth Divide

The study discovered that the disparity between the wealth of the typical individual and someone in the wealthiest decile was £1 million in 2006-08, but had widened to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by the pandemic years.

The economist added: "These disparities are especially alarming as economic movement in Britain is limited – people that start life well-off tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Despite the financial disparity expanding in specific figures, the portion of overall assets in the UK possessed by the richest households – called "comparative financial divide" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s," per the analysis.

Over this timeframe, complete net worth in the UK surged from thrice the gross domestic product, to nearly seven and a half times.

Drivers of Economic Disparity

So-called "automatic" appreciation, by means of growing real estate costs and adjustments to pension valuations, were the main drivers of the widening wealth gap since 2010, according to the analysis.

These appreciations tended to accrue to elderly homeowners, the research shows – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.

Generational Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in actual value, from £135k in the mid-2000s, to 310 thousand pounds.

Area-Based Differences

Additionally, there were stark regional variations, with the median value of wealth in recent years amounting to 290 thousand pounds in the southeastern region, where real estate values have generally grown substantially, as opposed to 110 thousand pounds in the NE of England.

COVID Era Consequences

Amid the health crisis, when millions of workers were protected by the public-funded employment protection, and Covid shutdowns limited opportunities for spending, the information reveals countless homes were in a position to set aside money, increasing their wealth.

Higher-income households performed significantly better, nevertheless. "The typical family in the poorest fifth saw their available funds increase by just £80 over the pandemic period (2019-20 to 2021-22), roughly identical to the pre-crisis period. On the other hand, the typical family in the highest income quintile saw their liquid savings grow by 4,200 pounds," the study reveals.
