In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
