Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
