The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
