Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.
Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
