The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will take a quarterly break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will produce two seasons every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a six-month break that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series covering one chapter, with some instead covering more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Today, anime production is structured in seasons, with one or two at most coming out each year, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
