Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the option to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
